Switching Lakes

We always plan our fishing trips with high hopes of the plans coming together and making for a memorable time on the ice. This ice season, we have been fortunate for having good ice and allows us to fish waters that we haven’t before or don’t get a lot of opportunities to.
Plan was to fish a lake that we have only fished in the boat and hopefully find some crappies. Decided that with the time of the year, the crappies would probably be using the main basin of the lake, being late morning, and started on the deeper edges.
Was marking fish right away but finding that these were all 4-inch perch and no matter where you drilled, these perch were everywhere. Moved out to the deepest section and started fishing and searching.

Wasn’t long and a good mark came onto the screen and the fish bit the jig/plastic combo and the fight ensued. After a couple of long runs, figured that this wasn’t a crappie and after a great battle, pulled the largest pickerel that I have caught out of the hole.
Took some pictures and released the fish back down the hole and setup to start fishing once again. Only a few minutes went by and the same thing happened, battled this fish for as long as the first but the jig hit the bottom of the hole, just as I seen the nose of the pickerel and it came off looking to be about the same size as the last one.

Just wasn’t finding the fish that I was looking for so packed up and headed off to another lake. This lake, the crappie have been biting very well with most of them in the 10-12-inch range. After drilling many holes, wasn’t long and the fish came in and ended the day with numbers of crappie, perch and bluegill being caught.
Both lakes I had been fishing the Clam Outdoors Drop-Kick jig in black color and using a Maki Plastics Spiiki in black, was the bait these fish preferred. The pickerel at the first lake were caught in the mid water column in 20 feet of water and the crappie were also in the mid water column in 18 FOW.
